Dr Vini Khurana's professional life includes over 30 years in the fields of medicine and surgery, including over 20 years of operative brain & spinal surgery, and expert neurosurgical consulting. He also has a keen interest in the technological frontier and utilities of remotely operated craft. He pilots between metropolitan and regional locations for work whenever he can.

Vini has utilised a surgical robot (Mazor/Medtronic) since 2017, and undertaken tele-medicine regularly since 2013 (i.e., from well before the COVID pandemic), as well as making use of intraoperative neuronavigation technologies for over 20 years. His first medical journal publications in the area of virtual reality and telerobotics in surgery were in 1999. Around the same time, he also carried out the world's first genetic modification of human brain arteries as part of his biomedical Ph.D. thesis work at the Mayo Graduate School. That body of work (cerebrovascular gene therapy) was associated with many medical and scientific conference presentations and publications, as well as receipt of the Mayo Clinic Thoralf Sundt Neurosurgical Research Fellowship and several awards in the USA. He holds two U.S. Patents as a Principal Inventor. He is also licensed by the Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA) to fly fixed wing single engine aircraft and multicopter drones.
